Intro

Nervous Records is a seminal American record label founded in 1991, renowned for its significant contributions to the house and hip-hop music scenes. Nervous Records has been instrumental in launching and nurturing the careers of numerous influential artists and producers, including Armand Van Helden, Todd Terry, Louie Vega and Masters at Work to name but a few. With a diverse catalogue that spans house, hip-hop, and various electronic music subgenres, Nervous Records continues to be a pivotal force of the industry.

Challenge

  • Redefine the visual identity of the Nervous Records website while retaining the label's distinctive brand elements
  • Create a responsive design that provides an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices, from desktop computers to smartphones and tablets
  • Build an an intuitive browsing experience for the user to easily find and explore the label’s latest releases 
  • Relaunch their 90s merchandise that has cultivated a cult-following and sell it through an eCommerce store

Key Ideas & Insights

A fresh but brand-consistent aesthetic 

Starting from the ground up we designed a completely new aesthetic for the website, giving the label the online presence it deserved. The design is clear and uncomplicated, featuring dark greys and the label’s signature yellow, maintaining a modern and sleek look. We also added bold typography, high-contrast colour palettes, and minimalist design elements to enhance readability and visual impact.

Modern, mobile-responsive design

We developed a responsive layout that automatically adjusts to different screen sizes, providing an optimal user experience on any device. This included creating fluid grids and flexible images to adapt the design to various resolutions and orientations.

Custom release section

For the label’s releases we created a custom section on the site that allows users to easily browse the label’s music catalogue. We included categorised listings, search and filter options, and detailed release pages with audio previews.

Creating dynamism and energy within the site

We implemented a dynamic slider that highlighted key areas of the label, enabling effortless promotion of events, releases and merchandise.

Integrated an easy-to-update eCommerce store for cult merchandise

We input a user-friendly online shop that showcases and sells the label’s merchandise and ensured the content management system (CMS) allowed for straightforward updates for the label to add, change and delete products easily.
